FY 2007 NIH Autism Spectrum Disorder Research Portfolio

In FY 2007, NIH devoted $127 million to research on autism spectrum disorder (ASD) through grants, contracts, research projects conducted as part of the NIH Intramural Research Program, and other mechanisms of support.

For planning purposes, the diverse portfolio of NIH-funded ASD research activities can be categorized into five broad research areas (Biology, Treatment, Diagnosis, Risk Factors, and Other), with each broad area further divided into several subcategories.

Although many activities address multiple areas of research, each research activity is assigned to only one research area and subcategory based on its primary aims and objectives.

Importantly, NIH invested $3.9 million in the development of the National Database for Autism Research (NDAR) in addition to the $127 million reported in FY 2007.

Research Areas and Corresponding Subcategories:

Research Area: Biology

Subcategories: Clinical Neuroscience, Basic Neuroscience, and Biological Systems

Research Area: Treatment

Subcategories: Psychopharmacology, Biomedical, Behavioral/Psychosocial, Services Research, and Biomarkers for Treatment Response

Research Area: Diagnosis

Research Area: Risk Factors

Subcategories: Genetics/Genomics, Environmental Influences and Gene x Environment Interplay, Mechanisms and Model Systems of Environmental Influences, and Psychosocial

Research Area: Other

Subcategories: Research Resources (e.g., data systems, repositories of biomaterials), Education and Dissemination, and Other
